Sledding in Spirit

Indiana had it’s first snow last week.  It was coming down like mad in this picture, you just can’t see it. It barely covered the ground by the time it finished, a thin layer of powder. However, the lack of measurable snowfall did not dampen the spirits of these four boys to see the first snow of the season.

I was upstairs working, when I hear the boys downstairs yelling,

“Daddy, there’s FROST coming down!”

Brad let them know this wasn’t frost it was the first snow, and they went WILD.  And I mean WILD.  They bolted up the stairs to come tell me, and could not WAIT to go out and play in it.

“SNOW! It’s SNOWING!!!  I can’t believe it’s really SNOWING!!!” Mom, it’s SNOWING!”

I dropped everything that seemed “important” just moments ago and began zipping up coats, and digging out my own warm layers, and so did Brad.

The next half and hour was filled with trying to catch snowflakes on our tongues, running down the sidewalk to stay warm, and watching the boys’ glee at the wonderful wet white magic falling from the sky.

Next thing I know, they are asking to make a snowman, drink hot chocolate, and sled. {Keep in mind there was no snow on the ground at the time – it was all melting as it hit the ground.} Brad granted their request to sled and pulled them around in the grass. Who says you need snow on the ground to sled, anyway?

It was the best 30 minutes of my day…possibly my week.  And I could have missed it if I decided it wasn’t worth bundling up for, or dismissed their excitement as juvenile.

I could have quickly crushed their spirits by complaining about the weather that had quickly changed from a warm 67 degrees, or grumbled about being too cold to stay outside with them, or given the “I’m too busy” excuse.

But I would have missed this…
